Fan Files $6B Lawsuit Against Jets, Giants For Use Of 'New York'

The lawsuit is seeking $6 billion in damages stemming from the Jets and Giants playing home games in Bergen County. Here's what to know.

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ — The New York Jets and the New York Giants do not play their home games in New York. You know this. We know this. Almost everyone who engages with the National Football League knows this.

But this fact has enraged one fan, so much so that a class action lawsuit has been filed "on behalf of millions" of fans, alleging false advertising, deception, unjust enrichment and, hold on to your hats, RICO, against both football teams, and the MetLife Stadium Company.

This isn't because Daniel Jones hasn't lived up to the lofty draft choice, or because Joe Judge hasn't built that foundation he's been clamoring about, or because Kenny Golladay isn't the top receiver the Giants will pay him to be for the next few years.

It's not even because of the butt fumble.

It's because, the lawsuit alleges, fans of these franchises "have been damaged by use of the “New York” (“NY”) name and brand and the out-of-state relocation of both franchises after the NFL Giants and Jets moved to the State of New Jersey to play football in MetLife Stadium (formerly Giants Stadium)."

How much damage? Billions of dollars worth, the lawsuit alleges.

The teams have siphoned "billions of dollars from interstate commerce that should have been rightfully spent in the State of New York," the lawsuit alleges.

"If the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Liberty, Rangers, and other New York franchises must play in New York and pay premium real estate costs and taxes to be branded a “New York” (“NY”) sports franchise, it is only fair that the NFL Giants and Jets do the same or change their name to accurately reflect the location of their stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey," the suit continued.

The lawsuit is asking for the Giants and Jets to return to stadiums in the state of New York when the contract with MetLife ends in 2025, and also asks that the teams be renamed to either the New Jersey or East Rutherford Jets and Giants as long as they play games in Bergen County.

Additionally, the suit is seeking $2 billion in monetary damages, and $4 billion in punitive damages.

By all accounts, this lawsuit doesn't have any legs. In fact, some legal experts were surprised a lawyer was even attached to it at all.

"A lawyer actually drafted and signed his name on this Complaint," Darren Heitner, who teaches sports law at the University of Florida, said in a Twitter thread.
