PARAMUS, NJ - Toys 'R' Us will return to Paramus just in time for Black Friday, with a smaller, revamped store in Westfield Garden State Plaza.

The iconic toy retailer is opening its first new U.S. store on Wednesday - two days ahead of the biggest shopping day of the year, according to the company. The reopening also comes a year after the once-beloved chain, formerly based in Wayne, liquidated all its stores.

A 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony, presided over by famed mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe, will be held before the store officially opens to the public.

The new "experiential" 6,500 square-foot store will be a fraction of the chain's former big box locations that were previously located in the borough. A second Toys 'R' Us store will also open this month at The Galleria in Houston, Texas.

The smaller format stores would include interactive play spaces and interactive displays to learn more about products.

While there will be fewer products on the shelves, the chain said sales associates will help shoppers complete sales transactions via Target.com for items not available in the store.

In October, Toys 'R' Us relaunched its website with games, action figures, a full section of toys, product reviews and videos. Since the inventory comes from Target, shoppers are directed to buy button at Target.com to complete the purchase.

Customers will be able to take advantage of Target.com benefits including free two-day shipping, same-day curbside or store order pickup, same-day delivery with Shipt, Target Circle loyalty benefits, easy in-store returns and 5 percent off when using a Target REDcard.

With Target's same-day pick-up and delivery options, Toys 'R' Us customers also will be able to get their online purchases ready for pickup or delivery to most U.S. households in as soon as an hour.

Toys 'R' Us, buckling under pressure from Amazon and several billions of dollars of debt, liquidated its stores last year after filing for Chapter 11 reorganization.

The chain later announced it would close or sell all of its 735 U.S. stores. Overall, about 31,000 people lost their jobs, including 1,100 at the Wayne headquarters.

Despite the efforts from billionaire CEO Isaac Larian, Toys 'R' Us did not accept his bid to save 274 U.S.-based stores and the thousands of jobs they supported.

Larian also would have kept the company's Wayne headquarters open as part of the bid, CNNMoney reported. Between 7,000 and 10,000 jobs would have been saved if the headquarters and stores remained open.
