Bergen County Parent Summonsed After 2 Teens Caught On Ebike: Police

After 2 teens were caught riding an ebike in one Bergen County town, the parent of a 13-year-old was summonsed, police said.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — The parent of a Paramus teen was summonsed on Sunday after police saw the child and another teenager riding an ebike in Glen Rock, police said.

Just after 5 a.m. Sunday, Officer Andrew Magro was patrolling the area of Rock Road and Doremus Avenue and saw "a motorized e-bicycle, being ridden by two younger juveniles, at a high rate of speed," said Glen Rock police.

Magro stopped the bike and found that it was being operated by a 14-year-old Paramus boy with a 13-year-old Rochelle Park boy as the passenger.

Police contacted the parents of both. The teens were released to their parents.

The parent of the Paramus boy was issued a summons for allowing the operation of an unregistered vehicle, police said.

Teens have been seriously injured and killed on ebikes and scooters, particularly in collisions with cars.

"With the increase in popularity of electric bikes and scooters on our roadways and sidewalks, the Glen Rock Police Department wants to make sure everyone is informed of the laws governing these devices," said a release. "Please remember to always drive safely and share the roadway."

Helmets and a license are required to ride an ebike in New Jersey.
