A man in his 60s or 70s driving an SUV went up to 2 girls and said something to them. A witness saw and scared the man away: Police.

GLEN ROCK, NJ — Police are investigating a "suspicious" incident where a man driving an SUV approached two young girls walking on Rutland Road Thursday afternoon.

The girls were walking on Rutland Road at about 5 p.m. when an older Hispanic man driving a white SUV approached them, said Chief Dean Ackermann.

The communication between the girls and the man is not entirely clear because of a language barrier, Ackermann said. The man spoke with a heavy Spanish accent.

A man who was walking by asked the girls if they knew who the man in the SUV was. They said "no" and he reprimanded the man in the SUV and told him to leave, which he did, the chief said.

There is no evidence to support that a criminal act was attempted, Ackermann said. Police are not investigating the incident as a luring.

"We do not yet have enough evidence to support that it was an attempted luring," Ackermann said. "We are hoping to locate and speak with the adult male witness in an effort to clarify what exactly took place."

The Hispanic man was described as maybe being in his 60s or 70s, with light brown skin, balding with black and gray hair, and yellowing teeth.
