'Heroes' Who Saved Woman From Drowning in Car Honored by Council

Three young men were honored by the borough for their heroic saving of a woman who might have drowned in her car if not for them quickly spurring to action.

On Wednesday, the borough council issued ceremonial proclamations and the keys to the borough to Glen Rock Volunteer Firefighter Thomas Pimlott and teenagers Mark Mifsud and Luke Kyriazis.

During the height of a flash flood on July 28, an 81-year-old Fair Lawn resident drove around a roadblock set up near the train tressle at Harding and Maple Avenue and became trapped when water rose inside the car, up to her neck.

Without regard to their own safety, Pimlott, Mifsud and Kyriazis jumped into the water and pulled the woman to safety.

"What those three men did that day is something you can't teach," said councilman and public safety chair Michael O'Hagan, who also witnessed the rescue. "It shows a selflessness and maturity level beyond their years."

"What you did was sponteaneous and yet level-headed," added Mayor John van Keuran. "You did exactly what should be done...but not more and not in a rushed way. I'm sure the person you saved appreciates what you did."

In the proclamation, the borough has designated July 28, 2012 as "Thomas Pimlottville," "Luke Kyriazisburg," and "Mark Mifsudelphia."

Kyriazis was unable to attend the ceremony on Wednesday.
