More Mail Stolen From Mailbox In Front Of NJ Post Office, Police Say

While federal investigators probe mail stolen from North Jersey mailboxes earlier this year, a new envelope was stolen last month.

NORTH JERSEY, NJ — As police continue investigating checks that were reported stolen from Bergen County mailboxes earlier this year, a more recent report has come in, said police in one town.

Police in Glen Rock said that on Friday, a resident reported that back on Aug. 3, they mailed two checks from the collection box in front of the Glen Rock Post Office.

They said that one of the checks was stolen, altered, and cashed by an unknown third party.

The situation mimics several reported earlier this year, in which victims told police that they had mailed checks from the box in front of the Glen Rock Post Office, only to find out they didn't reach the intended recipient. Instead, someone swiped the checks, altered them, and cashed them.

At the time, the town's police chief said that checks had been stolen from his town and nearby areas.

In this case, the complainant put a stop payment on the second check and referred the matter to their bank's fraud department, police said.

"This is one in a series of incidents where residents and local businesses have reported that their checks have been stolen from the mail and resulted in fraudulent activity," said Glen Rock Police Chief Dean Ackerman.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service also has been investigating, he said.

Previous Incidents

In April, Patch reported that two people who mailed checks from the box in front of the Glen Rock Post Office lost $23,523.74 in total due to the fraud.

The checks were mailed nearly a month apart, police said —on Jan. 20 and then on Feb. 16.

"Over the past several months, numerous reports of this nature have been received concerning checks mailed in both Glen Rock and other area communities," Chief Ackermann said at the time.
