Cop Tackles Shoplifter Outside Glen Rock CVS, Another Escapes With Deodorant: Police

A shoplifter was chased and caught by a police officer at a Bergen County CVS, but another got away with $455 in deodorant, cops say.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Glen Rock's CVS reported two shoplifting incidents to police on two days in a row last month, and one perpetrator was arrested after being tackled outside the store.

Police in that town say that on Aug. 26, just before 10 p.m., the manager of the store, in the Rock Road Central Business District, reported a
shoplifting right after it occurred.

A man had taken $ 244 worth of deodorant, body wash, eye drops, a hair cutting kit, and candy, placed the items in a bag and fled the store, police said.

The shoplifted items were recovered, police said.

Michael Hand, age 33, of Highland Lakes, was charged with third-degree resisting arrest, third degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance (clozapine), and fourth-degree shoplifting.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail to await an appearance before Central Judicial Processing at the Superior Court in Hackensack, police said.

The next day, around 7:15 p.m, the manager reported that a half hour earlier, store employees had seen a man acting suspicious.

After the man left, the video surveillance system showed that he'd shoplited $455 worth of deodorant.

He was described as a "white male in his 30s, clean shaven, wearing green shorts, grey shirt, grey sneakers, and an orange baseball cap."

He was last seen walking away from the store toward Rock Road, police said.

Video surveillance is being reviewed by the Detective Bureau.
