Report: Paying for Parking by Smartphone Coming to Glen Rock

No longer will commuters have to turn their cars inside out to feed Glen Rock parking meters, according to a Friday report in the Glen Rock Gazette.

The paper says the option to pay for commuter parking spots near the train stations by smart phone will be phased in for residents starting in December.

Glen Rock officials entered an agreement with Parkmobile USA earlier this year and, according to the article, residents have the option to pay a yearly fee to use the service, with non-residents paying daily, weekly or annually.

There is no cost to the borough; the service works using existing meters.

According to its website, commuters must download Parkmobile USA's ap on their smartphones and create an account. Up to five license plates can be registered per account. Customers can select which parking spot they've taken and how long they'll be occupying it once they identify the meter number. Once it's all set up, a text message and email come back.

The company receives 35 cents per transaction and the borough receives its normal parking payment. Customers also receive a text message 15 minutes before time expires on the meters.

According to the Gazette article, the company is also interested in setting up shop in Ridgewood. Parkmobile USA has hundreds of participating cities spanning from San Diego, CA to Montclair, NJ.
