Woman Escapes Newcomb Road House Fire
Ridgewood Fire Department responds quickly, puts out rag fire in basement
An elderly Ridgewood Lawns resident escaped safely after a fire broke out in a Newcomb Road basement Thursday morning.
According to Chief Jim Van Goor, a pile of rags near the furnace caught fire just after 10:30 a.m. leading to heavy smoke conditions.
"We responded quickly enough to contain the fire to the rags," Van Goor said, crediting his force for being fleet of foot. "There was some smoke damage. The heater might be finished."

Due to the damaged heater, the homeowner may not be able to return home until it's fixed, the chief said. She did not suffer injuries, Van Goor said.
and EMS also responded to the scene. Roads leading to Newcomb were closed off as emergency personnel attended the scene.

A fast-action response team from Ho-Ho-Kus was also dispatched to Newcomb Road.
"We got to the fire fast again and kept the damage to a minimal amount," Van Goor said. "The guys did a great job."
