Sentencing for Former Police Union Leader on Theft Count Delayed

Judge's chambers confirms hearing pushed to June 25.

The sentencing for a former Ridgewood police union leader who previously pled guilt to theft charges has been delayed a week, according to a superior court judge's office.

Superior Court Judge Eugene H. Austin's office confirmed today that sentencing for Sgt. William Hemmer—a former Police Benevolent Association leader—will be delayed until June 25.

Originally Hemmer, who pled guilty to a third-degree theft by deception charge, was supposed to be sentenced June 18. In January, Hemmer was arrested and charged for depositing $65,000 in police union funds into his personal bank account.

The 17-year Ridgewood officer was suspended with pay last October, and pay was stopped in December. Ridgewood police officials previously have said Hemmer can't be officially terminated until after sentencing.

Austin will sentence Hemmer at 9 a.m. in Hackensack June 25.
