Teen Bicyclist Seriously Injured In Crash With SUV In Bergen County: Police

A 14-year-old Ridgewood bicyclist was left in serious condition after a collision with an SUV on Saturday in Glen Rock, police said.

RIDGEWOOD, NJ — A 14-year-old Ridgewood bicyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a compact SUV on Saturday at the intersection of Prospect Street and Grove Avenue, Glen Rock Police Chief Dean Ackermann said.

According to the driver of the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox and two independent witnesses, the SUV, which was traveling southbound on Prospect Street, had a green light and was within the intersection when the teenager pulled out in front of the vehicle, Ackermann said.

The bicyclist was treated on scene and taken to an area hospital. Police could not interview him at the time of the incident, due to his serious condition. His injuries, Ackermann added, do not appear to be life threatening.

The operator of the vehicle, a 40-year-old Oakland man, remained on scene and cooperated with police. He told officers he did not see the bicyclist prior to the collision and was not even sure what side of the street the teenager entered the intersection from, police said.

Speed was not determined to be a factor in the collision, Ackermann said. No summonses are to be issued.
