Ali was brought to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, prosecutors said.

County and local detectives determined that Ali was "attempting to forcefully gain access to the front door of the residence utilizing a spear-type object. After a failed attempt, Amr Ali then tried to enter the residence by breaking a window."

That was when the 62-year-old homeowner, who was inside with two family members, confronted him and "ultimately" fired three shots at him, hitting him once, prosecutors said.

Ali lived in the basement apartment of the home, prosecutors said.

The investigation is ongoing.

"No other information is available at this time while the investigation is underway, but more details will be released when possible," prosecutors said.
