Week in Review: Light Time Controversy Continues, JWoww Shakes the Village

If you missed it, take a look at what happened this week in Ridgewood.

The week contained news on pot holes, late light times, an elderly man's Valentine's Day, possible raises for management after unprecedented layoffs, a more expensive Graydon, a snow dumping that was not to be and a reality show star attracting fans in frigid temperatures. Check out our top seven stories this past week.

1) JWoww tans the village

The star of reality show Jersey Shore on Tuesday night to sign autographed copies of The Rules According to JWoww. The bronze Long Island girl sold out copies of her book and Bookends had quite a night, as possibly a thousand fans snaked around the corner of E. Ridgewood Ave. in the freezing cold.

2) A modest proposal

Sports dads spoke in favor of the school board signing off on the Fields Committee of the three main sports venues in town–RHS Stadium, Stevens Field and Veterans Field. A leader in the neighborhood opposition spoke out against the drafted proposal and board members also expressed hesitation. The school board will likely vote on the fields policy on Feb. 28. Both the school board and village council must sign off on the fields policy for it to take effect,

3) Jamboree: The Village Through a Lens

The through song, dance, acting and embarrassment. This year's theme of love, community, family and work made for an excellent performance and the show raised $65,000 for scholarships to help RHS students.

4) A decidedly weird council meeting

In terms of legislation, not a whole lot happened at . But that doesn't mean nothing happened. Patch commenter Dom Nizza, all 89-years of him, told the council about the ongoings of both his past love life and future Valentine's Day plans (Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh was invited to dinner with Mayor Keith Killion apparently picking up the tab) while Villadom Times journalist John Koster broke protocol and addressed the council, telling them he doesn't support Dr. Seuss being celebrated for a national reading day.

5) Council considers incentive raises for management

While not all council members are in agreement, Village Manager Ken Gabbert has provided his proposal to grant non-union employees and for their performance in 2010. The proposal would also provide the same merit-based bonus in 2011. The council is expected to vote on it March 8.

6) Graydon fees on the rise

The numbers are out for the controversial in 2011 and 2012. Early season badge prices will be lower than that of later dates and the fees will be increasing by about $10 in 2011 and around $15 in 2012.

7) S'no-more: DEP tells village to halt snow dumping into brook

With record snowfall and few if any places to put it, the village was granted permission to by the DEP. Then, late last week they were told not so fast. The village can no longer dump snow into the brook as the DEP said it had concerns over a narrowing of the brook near the snow-dumping section and the village is now back at square one.
