Woman Rescued From Passaic River After Boat Capsizes: Police

The woman, who is in her mid-20s, was taken to the hospital for physical and psychological evaluations, police said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A woman in her mid-20s was pulled from the Passaic River in Wallington and taken to the hospital after her boat capsized Friday afternoon, police said.

The Passaic woman was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center for evaluation and did not suffer any serious injuries, said Wallington Capt. Shawn Kudlacik.

It was not immediately clear why the woman was out on the boat in near freezing temperatures, Kudlacik said.

Police got a 911 call from someone who saw the woman swimming in the river at about 12:45 p.m., the captain said. The caller motioned for the woman to come to shore.

The woman was partially in the water when police arrived. In the river was a capsized boat with two purses on it, Kudlacik said.

Police said the woman mentioned she had a child and there was also a towel on top of the capsized boat, the captain said.

Once police confirmed the woman's identity, which was not released, she was taken to the hospital for physical and psychological evaluations, Kudlacik said.

"We don't know if she was under the influence of something or if she was emotionally disturbed, we're just trying to help her," Kudlacik said.

A Wallington police detective will interview the woman once her evaluation is completed.
