Devoted Catholic, Giants Fan Returns Home

Francis J. Maher, 91, of River Edge, passed away at his home on November 10, 2011.

He was born in Trenton, and was the son of the late Michael and Nora (Meara) Maher.

Francis graduated from Cathedral High School in Trenton. After completing his Bachelor’s degree, he went on to earn two Master’s degrees in Sociology and Theology. He was ordained a Conventual Franciscan priest in 1951.

During his time as a priest, he was a Missionary in Costa Rica for 8 years. He was principal of St. Francis High School in Moravia, Costa Rica, which has grown into one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Father Aloysius Maher (Padre Luis) has been recognized by the school for his integral part in the formation of their soccer team 'los mosquitos' that he mentored.

He left the priesthood, but kept lifelong friendships with his Franciscan brothers. Many have predeceased him, but he left behind close friends Dan, Charlie, Bill, Jim, Bruno and The Captain.

Francis married his wife Jeannette in 1968 and began teaching at Hackensack High School that same year. He will be remembered by his colleagues and students who he inspired. Following his retirement in 1988, he moved to Eatontown, where he lived for 8 years prior to moving back to Bergen County in 2007. Francis was a dedicated NY Giants and Mets fan.

He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Peter the Apostle Parish in River Edge, whose members ministered to him at home when he could no longer attend mass. He was well known for his compassion and undying support and prayers for those in need. His spirit will forever live on in the hearts of so many lives that he inspired. 

He was predeceased by brothers Richard, Daniel and John Maher, sisters Mary Capewell and Margaret Cook. 
He is survived by his beloved wife Jeannette, son David, daughters Nora and Anne Marie Wagner, son-in-law Donald Wagner Jr., of Dumont and four grandchildren Courtney, Donald III, Kaitlin and Bridget Wagner.

He is also survived by his brother Philip (Emily) Maher of Maryland, sisters-in-law, Stephanie Maher of Trenton, Madeline Hazlett of Florida, Alada Faber of Florida, Mary and her husband Robert Hoffman of North Tonawanda, New York. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
