Beautification Committee Keeps River Edge Blooming

Planting, weeding and watering, the Beautification Committee keeps the town in full bloom.

The bountiful garden surrounding the entrance to the River Edge Public Library was three years in the making. For three years, River Edge Beautification Committee Chairwoman Michele Cariddi and Co-chair Karen Sabatello had their hands in the dirt digging, planting, transplanting, weeding, mulching and watering the now blooming storybook garden they painstakingly designed.

"We wanted to design a garden that would be bursting with color every season," Cariddi said. "One that children could enjoy exploring."

Sabatello added that one of the garden's main attractions of the summer season is the gigantic sunflower that is already making its grand ascension. "Last year it grew so tall that we had to relocate it," she said.

In addition to the Library gardens, the Beautification Committee has also designed and maintains the gardens at Borough Hall and the triangle across from Total Wines.

According to Cariddi, the Beautification Committee is self-funding and this year received an open space grant.

The Beautification Committee is actively seeking volunteers who want to get their hands dirty and help plant gardens throughout the borough to keep the town looking beautiful.
