Athletic Updates: May 7-8

A quick look at the Crusaders and Golden Hawks exploits in athletics.

It was a busy weekend for the Golden Hawks and Crusaders with wins and losses coming their way.

River Dell baseball started off with a Friday win over Westwood 7-3. The Cardinals have been a thorn in the Hawks side for the past few years when it comes to the County and State tournaments but Bob Croonquist led the way on the mound and at bat with a pair of RBI's. Tim Barnes, John Budka and Dave Crouch also knocked in runs as well. Then on Saturday, RD Baseball clinched another win, 16-3 over Tenafly. Bob Croonquist and Brandon Martinez blasted in a pair of doubles with Dave Crouch nailing a home run. Ryan Duran, Dylan Smith and Evan Stern each contributed at the plate as well.

Bergen Catholic Baseball did not have the same luck on Friday as they fell 14-3 against the Dumont Huskies. In his first start, Anthony Apreda struggled letting up 13 runs in the first three innings of a five inning game. The Crusaders bats were bolstered by Mike Rucereto's double and Eric Flanagan's triple, but not enough to get a rally started.

Sara Recanti picked up her second win on the mound with River Dell softball's 5-2 Friday win over Westwood. Recanti also knocked in an RBI along with Stephanie Caracozza and Joan Marie Massaro.

Brendan McCullagh and Kirk Nouhan led the charge in BC Volleyball's 2-1 win over Passaic on Friday. McCullagh had 27 kills, while Nouhan notched a resounding 41 assists. Hacik Arslanoglu piked up eight digs.

Thomas Barnes is still on a streak with River Dell Golf, knocking down the Ridgewood Maroons, 159-173. Barnes came in under par with a 35 while Scott Kim finished with 38.

Crusaders and River Dell Tennis picked up a 4-1 win over their competition on Friday. In BC singles Brian Balico, Sean Fernandez and Bradni Black took their matches followed by doubles team Matt Liguori and Dan Gomez over Passaic. Against Westwood, Hawks singles Dzan Harba and Andrew Bortnick took the lead with doubles teams Patrick Thane/Jared Sapin and Mike Albanese/Brandon Pepi clinching the win.

It was a tough weekend for River Dell boys and girls track at the County Seat Invitational at Ramsey. The boys finished in a 9th place tie with Lodi and the girls came in a three-way tie for 9th with Dickinson and Kearny.

In shot put, Dan Messmer threw for 46-3 and three quarters followed by Matt Koh's 45-2 and a quarter. Patrick Seller's discuss flew 133-8. Jill Hudson's shot put went 35-0 and three-quarters and her discuss landed at 105-10.
