Athletic Updates: May 9

A quick recap look of the Hawks and Crusaders varsity athletics.

After their shut-out loss to Ramsey in the County softball Round of 16 tournament, the River Dell Lady Hawks came back yesterday in a regular season match-up and returned the favor with a 1-0 win over the Rams. Chloe DeSanctis improved her season record to 11-4 after she and Rams pitcher Ally Mende went seven innings in a pitcher's duel before a run was scored. That run, by the Hawks' Sara Recanati came in the final inning to give River Dell a win. For the season, the Hawks are 2-1 over Ramsey and the two teams may meet once more in the state tournament.

The Golden Hawks baseball squad did not fair as well as their female counterparts against Ramsey, falling 4-1. The Rams took an early first inning lead and quickly stomped on the Hawks attempt at a rally. Bob Croonquist batted in the lone River Dell RBI.

It was also a tough day for RD Tennis, falling 3-2 to Ramsey. With the first singles match taken by Ramsey by forfeit, it was an uphill battle by the Hawks who lost the  next two singles matches. Doubles teams Patrick Thane/Jared Sapin and Mike Albanese/George Kim picked up wins for the Hawks.

Bergen Catholic's baseball team went 10 innings against a tough St. Joseph Regional team for a 9-8 win. Coming from behind, the Crusaders had a huge five-inning rally in the seventh inning to force a tie and extended the game. Toby Schwartz who is the winning pitcher batted in a double and two RBI's. Elliot Conn's 10th inning home run clinched the game. Eric Flanagan, with 5 RBI's had a seventh inning grand slam. Charles Chen also had an RBI.

BC Golf was at the Essex County Country Club against St. Peter's and kept their undefeated streak going with a 153 to 163 victory. The 19-0 Crusaders were led by Harrison Shih (35), Peter Repetto (39) and Ryan Rose (39).

Crusaders Tennis easily dispatched the St. Joseph Regional Knights 4-1 on the court. Brian Balico, Sean Fernandez and Bradni Black went three-for-three in the singles matches to put BC ahead with doubles team Matt Liguori/Alex Hart clinching the win.
