Route 4 Bridge Project to Cause Highway Closures

Work is scheduled to begin Monday in Englewood

By Patch Editor Noah Cohen

Crews are set to begin work Monday on a $1.5 million project to replace the Route 4 bridge deck over Flat Rock Brook in Englewood that will cause the highway to be closed in one direction over two weekends, officials said.

At least one lane will remain open in each direction Monday and Tuesday during the initial stages of the project, according to the state Department of Transportation.

“The eastbound lanes will have a single lane closure from 9 p.m. through 6 a.m. and a double lane closure from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on both Monday and Tuesday nights. The westbound lane will have one lane closed from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on both nights,” the agency said.

Work be on hold from 6 a.m. Wednesday through noon on July 8 for the July 4 weekend, the DOT said. Overnight lane closures are set to resume after the holiday when milling of the bridge asphalt and removal of the concrete slab begins.

The DOT said a temporary structure and steel plates will be installed as part of the project.

Weekend lane closures are scheduled to begin in late July or early August when crews will install the new bridge deck.

“The use of pre-cast concrete bridge components will enable NJDOT to significantly shorten the construction schedule and minimize impacts to traffic,” the department said.

The agency plans to issue alerts to motorists ahead of the Route 4 closures. Travel updates are available at 511nj.org, the state’s real-time traffic website.

The Flat Rock Brook crossing was built in 1931 and its deck is listed in poor condition, according to U.S. Federal Highway Administration data.
