New Details In Death Of 13-Year-Old Hit While Riding E-Bike In Union County

Mayor Josh Losardo is calling on residents to lean on each other in the face of this tragedy.

UPDATE: A driver in a landscaping truck hit the boy and was found near the scene. The individual is cooperating with police.

Mountainview Avenue is still closed.

SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A 13-year-old student died Wednesday after being hit by a vehicle while riding an electric bicycle.

At around 2:15 p.m., the eighth grader was riding at the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Mountainview Avenue when he was hit by a commercial vehicle. The student was taken to University Hospital in Newark and later pronounced dead.

Mayor Josh Losardo says the Scotch-Plains Fanwood Board of Education was notified and will have counselors available for students and staff. The township will also be making resources available for first responders.

"At moments like this, it is more important than ever that we come together as a community, to support one another, to lean on each other, and to show compassion in the face of tragedy," says Losardo.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of this child. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they endure the unimaginable."
