Fanwood High School Senior Selected For NJ Special Olympics Team

The 18-year-old swimmer received a huge sendoff from the community before departing for the Special Olympics last weekend.

FANWOOD, NJ — Maddy Joe, a senior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, is off to the races, as she will compete in the Special Olympics 2022 USA Games in Orlando Florida this week.

After her swim practice at the Jewish Community Center on Martine Avenue in Scotch Plains on Thursday, Joe was given a huge sendoff by fellow swimmers, friends, family and first responders from Fanwood and Scotch Plains.

Both police departments, the Fanwood Rescue Squad and the Fanwood Fire Department were all in attendance. Joe's father, Nam-June, is an EMT with the Fanwood squad.

According to a press release, the hundred or so attendees threw confetti and hugs Joe's way as she walked out of the JCC. Joe's mother, father and sister Carolyn led the pack.

Joe, who is 18 years old, has been swimming since she was a little girl. She has swum for the JCC for the past six years, three of them as a volunteer coach.

She has also competed in the Special Olympics for five consecutive years. The Special Olympics began June 5 and will continue until Sunday, June 12.

Joe will attend Ramapo College in the fall.
