SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ – A bomb threat was reported Monday morning at the JCC of Central Jersey, prompting an evacuation and comprehensive search of the facility, authorities said.
Scotch Plains Police were notified around 8:02 a.m., after JCC staff received an email claiming explosive devices had been planted in the building and were set to detonate.
Staff at the Martine Avenue facility had already begun evacuating before officers arrived on the scene, police said.
Working with JCC personnel, Scotch Plains Police, Fire Department, and EMS safely relocated arriving summer campers to a secure nearby location while the building underwent assessment, authorities said.
Following a thorough sweep of the building, no explosive materials were found and the facility was declared safe. The parking lot was reopened and staff helped coordinate the orderly return of personnel and campers to the JCC, police said.
The Union County Police Department and Union County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit assisted in the response.
The investigation continues as authorities work to identify the source of the threat.
Police report no ongoing danger to the community and are asking anyone with information to contact the Scotch Plains Police Department at (908) 322-7100.
