Man Drove Stolen Moped Through Secaucus, Had Shoplifting Devices: PD

Secaucus Police say this man was driving a moped stolen out of Union City through Secaucus last Friday morning, April 26.

SECAUCUS, NJ — Secaucus Police say this man was driving a moped stolen out of Union City through Secaucus last Friday morning, April 26.

The young man was stopped by Secaucus Police Officer Robert Schaffer in the area of Plaza Drive at 11:24 a.m. Friday.

Officer Schaffer said he observed Andy Perez, a Union City resident, operating a 2023 Fly motorcycle-style moped without a helmet. Furthermore, Perez was driving the moped at high rates of speed and disregarding traffic signs, said police.

Schaffer stopped the moped in the area of Plaza Drive and Paterson Plank Road. During the motor vehicle stop, Perez provided false information pertaining to his identity, said police. The moped was then discovered to have been stolen from Union City the day before, Thursday, April 25.

Perez was arrested. At the time of his arrest, he was found in possession of sensors commonly used as “anti-shoplifting” devices, said police. He was also found with merchandise from the Secaucus Marshalls, which police allege had just been shoplifted just before he was stopped.

Perez was charged with Receiving a Stolen Vehicle [2C:20-10.2], Hindering his own Apprehension/Prosecution [2C:39-3b(4)] and Shoplifting [2C:20-11b(1)] along with a slew of motor vehicle summonses. He was released, pending a court date.
