SECAUCUS, NJ — A grand jury has voted not to file any criminal charges in the death of Reymis Geronimo-Segura, 28, who died in Secaucus on August 16, 2023.

Geronimo-Segura, a North Bergen resident, died after the motorcycle he was driving collided with a car; this happened while he was fleeing from a Hudson County Sheriff’s officer trying to pull him over, said NJ Attorney General Matt Platkin.

After hearing testimony and evidence, a grand jury voted "no bill" this week, meaning no criminal charges should be filed against Hudson County Sheriff’s Officer Andrew Conti, Jr.

On that date, Conti was driving a marked K-9 police car. Shortly after 12 p.m., he tried to pull over the motorcycle, driven by Geronimo-Segura, for motor vehicle violations. The AG never released what the violations were.

Conti first saw the motorcycle in the area of Paul Amico Way and Seaview Drive. Conti followed the motorcycle onto County Avenue northbound, with his lights and sirens activated to try to pull the bike over.

Geronimo-Segura got behind a tractor-trailer and then passed the truck on the right side, continuing north on County Avenue.

Conti then radioed to dispatch that he would not be pursuing. Seconds later, at 12:22 p.m., the motorcycle crashed into a white SUV as the SUV was pulling out of a cross street, Charles Street, onto County.

Conti continued to the crash scene, which you can watch here: https://njoag.app.box.com/s/02...He got out of his police car and approached Geronimo-Segura, who had been ejected from the motorbike. The officer called for medical assistance.

Geronimo-Segura was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where, despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at 1:13 p.m. The people in the SUV sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

This week, the NJ Attorney General released all the video recordings in relation to the crash. You can see it here: https://njoag.box.com/s/02sm8n5m51naobjdlp5uei9dne38a08p

NJ state law requires the Attorney General investigate anytime someone dies in an encounter with a law enforcement officer. The law requires that all evidence be presented to a grand jury to determine if the officer or officers broke the law, or could be indicted.

The investigation into Geronimo-Segura's death included witness interviews, video footage and autopsy results from the medical examiner. This evidence was presented to a state grand jury as well as to the young man's family.

After his death last summer, a candlelit vigil was set up for Geronimo-Segura on County Ave. at Shetik Field.
