Cost Of Water & Sewer May Increase By 7% In South Brunswick

The 7 percent hike would generate $1.8 million in revenue for the Township. Officials are currently working on a 'reasonable solution.'

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — Residents in the township may soon see an increase in the amount they are paying for utilities.

During the meeting last week, Council discussed introducing an ordinance that would increase water and sewer rates by 7 percent across the board in South Brunswick.

The recommendation came from the Township’s current CFO, according to officials. The 7 percent increase would generate $1.8 million in revenue for the Township, which is currently in deficit.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Joe Camarota asked the Municipal Manger Bryan Bidlack to provide a breakdown of utility cost increase between residential and commercial units for more clarity.

“One of the things we all hear are the complaints about the water and sewer rates in the residential segment of the community. So, I would like to see more of a breakdown of what the residential water and sewer amount is specifically,” Camarota said.

“Instead of 7 percent, maybe there’s a better number.”

Mayor Charlie Carley agreed with Camarota, and asked the manager for specific numbers.

“We all know that inflation is running at 8 to 9 percent, so 7 percent is a little bit below it,” Carley said.

“I rely on Joseph to work with Mr. Bidlack to come to a reasonable solution.”

The revised ordinance is expected to be introduced at the next council meeting scheduled on Nov. 21.
