Letter: South Brunswick Needs to Improve Pedestrian Safety

John O'Sulivan, Monmouth Junction

Pedestrian safety is important for all citizens who cross the heavily traveled roads in our township.  Many of our cross walks need more signage to inform the drivers of cars and trucks of the presence of pedestrians.

One way to help alleviate this problem is to use the yellow plastic “yield to pedestrians” safety signs which are put out in the middle of the road in the cross walk zone so it can be seen by the traffic.

Here is a partial list of streets that need extra signage:

  • Stanely Avenue crosswalk allowing citizens to cross over Kingston Lane safely to the library
  • Margate Drive and Ridge Road (Rt 522) so citizens can cross over from one side to the other to get to the sidewalk
  • Beekman Road in Kendall Park, to help people cross safely to Veterans Park
  • Constable Road in Kendall Park so citizens can cross New Road safely
  • Sand Hill and Old Beekman Road in Kendall Park so citizens can cross over safely.

Several local residents have brought this intersection to my attention, saying how dangerous this intersection is.

I’ve heard that the township has applied for grants to get the more sophisticated solar powered cross walk signs.  However, the danger is now and we are not guaranteed to receive the grant money.

Isn’t it cheaper, wiser and safer for our citizens to have the yellow plastic pedestrian stop signs up before something unfortunate happens?

Sincerely,
