The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) began regional resurfacing and roadway repair last week on Route 27 in the South Brunswick area.
The $5.7 million project will mill and repave sections of asphalt and concrete roadway on two other highways, in addition to Route 27, in Middlesex and Somerset counties. Work on Route 27 will be performed in both directions from Vliet Road (milepost 8.6) at the border of South Brunswick and Franklin, to north of Evelyn Avenue (milepost 10.76) at the border of North Brunswick and Franklin.
Work will also be done on Route 18 in both directions between the NJ Transit railroad bridge in New Brunswick (near milepost 42.6) and the existing northern section of the highway in Piscataway (milepost 45.3), the DOT said.

Route 26 will be repaved in both directions from the Route 1 interchange (milepost 0) to north of CR 680/Howe Lane (milepost 1.45) in North Brunswick.
The project is anticipated to improve safety and extend the lifespan of the roadway at each location, including travel lanes, turn lanes, side streets, ramp and shoulders. The roads will also be restriped with new image-detection cameras to be installed at certain intersections to replace existing underground loop detectors, according to the DOT.

The work will be performed using an allowable lane closures schedule, to keep at least one lane open at each location during peak traffic hours. Access to all businesses will also be maintained. The DOT said the project is expected to be complete in late-fall 2013.

Work to the Beekman Road and Route 27 intersection is also nearing completion. The improvements include widening the intersection, an improved turn radius, and the addition of a right-hand turn lane. The intersection will also receive a new traffic signal that will include right-hand turn only lighting.
Township officials said completion of the project is imminent, but no firm timetable was available.
