County Sponsoring Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event

Union County residents can dispose of any hazardous household waste later this month.

The Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders is sponsoring a household special waste collection event later this month so county residents can safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals and other items.

The recycling event will take place on Saturday, April 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools campus, 1776 Raritan Road in Scotch Plains, so Union County residents can get rid of outdated or unwanted household chemicals, mercury thermostats, propane tanks and automobile tires in an environmentally safe manner, Union County said.

The event is free for all county residents and pre-registration is not required.

“The special household waste recycling program for Union County residents is particularly important as we become more aware of the need for proper disposal of hazardous items that are found around the home,” Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh said in a release. “The result of our effort is safer homes and a cleaner environment for our families and our neighbors.”

Residents simply need to drive to the location of the event with their household waste and workers at the site will unload their vehicles. Latex (water-based) paint and empty paint cans will not be accepted and there is an eight automobile tire (without rims) limit per household, the county said.
