Expect Closures On Springfield Main St. Due To Bridge Construction

Drivers should expect lane closures on Main Street Friday night, as the bridge deck replacement project advances in Springfield, NJDOT said.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — Drivers can expect overnight lane closures on Main Street/CR 577 Friday night, as the bridge deck replacement project advances in Springfield, according to announcement from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday, until 6 a.m. Saturday, NJDOT’s contractor, Kyle Conti Construction, is scheduled to close the northbound lane on Main Street/CR 577 between Springfield Avenue and Bleeker Street with alternating traffic using the southbound lane.

This closure is necessary to restripe the roadway and reposition construction barrier to establish a new traffic pattern on the east side of the bridge, NJDOT said.

By Saturday morning, both northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to the newly constructed east side of the bridge. The west side of the bridge will be closed for demolition and reconstruction. Pedestrian access will be maintained on the east side of the bridge.

This traffic configuration is expected to be in place through summer 2022.

This construction is part of an $8.2 million project that will replace the existing bridge deck, that sits above I-87, which is in poor condition. In addition to replacing the deck, the project includes the installation of new overhead sign structures on I-78 and new guiderails.

The project is being constructed in stages to minimize impact to traffic, according to NJDOT. It is expected to be completed by fall 2022.

Variable message signs are being used to provide advance notification of all traffic pattern changes associated with the bridge project. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
