3 Car Thefts, 1 Attempted Theft In Summit Last Week: Police

SUMMIT, NJ — A handful of car thefts and one attempted theft occurred in Summit last week, according to most recent Summit Police blotter.

Summit is not the only Union County town that has seen an increase in car thefts recently. Westfield Police Chief, Christopher Battiloro, said there has been an uptick in car thefts in Westfield within the past few weeks.

The first report of car thefts in Summit last week was on Tuesday, July 5 when two cars were stolen from a home on Edison Drive. Police said the victim misplaced their keys on the night of July 4 and discovered in the morning that both cars were missing.

The stolen cars were a black 2014 Dodge Durango, valued at $24,000, and a white 2018 Audi A5, valued at $32,000, according to police.

Then on Wednesday, July 6, an attempted car theft occurred at 6:02 a.m. at a Morris Avenue business, according to police. Police said while the victim was inside the business, they saw an unknown person enter their car that was left running.

Police said the victim ran outside and yelled at the individual to exit the car. The suspect then fled the area.

Another resident's car was stolen from their home on Tanglewood Drive. The resident said the car was taken during the overnight hours between July 5 and July 6, according to police.

Taken was a black 2021 BMW X5, valued at $60,000, police said.

Police said it was not known at the time of the report if the victim left the key fob in the vehicle.
