COVID Cases In Summit Down From Month Of May: Health Department

The COVID-19 transmission rate in Summit currently is moderate, according to the Health Department.

SUMMIT, NJ — The Westfield Regional Health Department released an update on COVID-19 data for Summit, as well as some monkeypox case data on Friday.

There were 210 cases of COVID-19 reported in Summit during the month of June, which was down from 355 cases in May, according to the Health Department.

This past week, the transmission level in Summit is moderate at a rate of 1.04 percent. Union County is also showing a moderate level of transmission activity, according to the Health Department.

On a statewide level, in June, New Jersey saw a daily average of 2,420 confirmed cases, which was down from 3,845 cases four weeks ago and 3,621 cases eight weeks ago. The state also saw five average daily fatalities — down from 11 four weeks ago and eight weeks ago.

The Health Department said New Jersey is the 29th highest nationally in confirmed cases per capita last week — down from seventh last month.

Statewide, New Jersey had an average of 884 hospitalizations this past week, which is an 11 percent increase in two weeks. Overlook reported 17 hospitalized patients last week.

As seen nationwide, New Jersey is seeing an increase in the BA4 and BA5 omicron variants, with cases of BA5 doubling in the past two weeks.

The Westfield Regional Health Department gave 58 vaccinations during the month of June and distributed over 1,250 home test kits to local childcare centers, senior housing authorities and residents in need.

They continue to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to those people aged six months and older. Appointments can be made online by visiting westfieldnj.gov/vaccine-appointments or by calling 908-789-4070. Home visits continue to be offered as well.

This past week, New Jersey also reported nine cases of monkeypox (MPX).

Although the risk to the public is considered low at this time, according to the Health Department, LabCorp began testing for MPX as it anticipates that cases may continue to rise.
