Flood Project, Firehouse Update On Agenda For Summit Council Meeting

The council will discuss flood mitigation, new traffic safety measures, liquor licenses and more at Tuesday night's meeting.

SUMMIT, NJ — The Summit Common Council has plans to discuss and vote on several important projects at its meeting this week.

Council will meet on Tuesday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. to discuss an update on the new fire headquarters that is under construction, as well as new traffic safety measures, a flood mitigation project, liquor licenses and more, according to the agenda.

The meeting is scheduled to kick off with an update on the new Fire Department Headquarters that is being built on Broad Street. Construction first started in Oct. 2021, and is not expected to be complete until early fall of 2023, as of the latest update.

Council will also introduce two Safety and Health ordinances to enhance pedestrian and motor vehicle safety in Summit, according to the agenda.

These ordinances will make Hobart Road one way in the northbound direction toward Hobart Avenue and create a four-way stop at Canoe Brook Parkway and Hartley Road.

The public hearings on both ordinances will be on Sept. 6.

In addition, Council will consider a resolution to authorize the issuance of a note for the Phase III Joint meeting Flood Mitigation Facilities Project in the amount of $3.5 million and sale of the note to the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank for Summit's share of the project.

According to the city, FEMA will reimburse 90 percent of these expenditures once work is completed.

Summit saw intense flooding during Hurricane Ida this past September.

In related news, Cranford recently received $1.8 million in state funding for their Southside Stormwater Improvement Project.

The Law and Labor Committee will also introduce two resolutions to renew the 2022-2023 liquor license for the Meat House and to extend sick leave pay for a Department of Community Services Fleet Maintenance Unit employee.

Lastly, the Council will consider a grant request from the Community Programs and Parking Services Committee to rehabilitate Mabie Playground, including the two basketball courts.

The grant application is for $100,000 to the and will require the city to provide a $100,000 match.

A second resolution will authorize the purchase of a show mobile — a portable performance stage used at Department of Community Programs events — to replace the current one that is over 20 years old.

The council has put the Broad Street West redevelopment project on pause, as they are reevaluating the redevelopment plan. Nothing related to the project is on the agenda for Tuesday night.
