New Sidewalk, Other Road Improvement Contracts Awarded In Summit

More than $1.65 million was awarded between the two contracts.

SUMMIT, NJ — Summit leaders unanimously approved two contracts on Monday night that will bring new sidewalk and other street features to two areas of the City.

A bid of $1,234,567.89 was awarded for the work to be done along Canoe Brook Parkway by Portofino Builders, LLC, out of Springfield. Portofino has worked on multiple capital improvement projects for the City in the past, including concrete work at the Family Aquatic Center.

Sidewalk, traffic calming measures, stormwater mitigation upgrades, speed humps, and trees will be installed. The intersection will also be realigned.

"I'm really excited to keep those residents safe," said Councilmember Delia Hamlet. "I would just ask that we work with the community and make sure we take as little trees down as possible and just hold ourselves to a higher standard."

Full milling and paving will be done along Canoe Brook Parkway between Bedford Road and Woodland Avenue.

Grant reimbursement funding of $1 million from the New Jersey Department of Transportation will be put toward the cost.

A bid of $419,085 was also awarded for the work to be done at Mount Vernon and Kent Place Boulevard by AJM Contractors out of Clifton. AJM has worked on multiple capital improvement projects for the City in the past, including the Tanglewood/Dorchester/Winchester Project.

Sidewalk on the northern side from Passaic Avenue to the Passaic River and upgraded drainage resources will be installed.

"I'm happy to see that a lot of the drainage, the sewers, were included in there," added Councilmember Jamel Boyer. "I know that was a big concern of the residents. Flooding is always a concern in Summit."

Full milling and paving of Mount Vernon Avenue and Kent Place Boulevard within the project limits will also be completed.

Grant reimbursement funding of $426,878 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation will be used to cover the cost.

"I knocked on all of those doors. Everybody was supportive except for one or two households," said Hamlet on the Mount Vernon Avenue construction.

"Canoe Brook Parkway overwhelmingly wanted those sidewalks," she also added.

Estimated dates of completion for both projects were not immediately available.
