MLK Day Of Service Events Announced In Summit
From special film screenings to volunteer opportunities, Summit is hosting a plethora of events in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
SUMMIT, NJ — For those looking to volunteer, participate in donation drives or attend a film screening this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, there are a variety of events happening this year in Summit.
This year marks Summit's 25th year celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. Events will run from Jan. 13 to Jan. 16 and all are free and open to the public.
Leading up to MLK Day, from Jan. 9 to Jan. 16, the Summit Area YMCA is accepting coats in all sizes for men, women and children to be donated for those in need. The coat donation box is located at the back entrance (Cedar Street) of the Summit YMCA.

In addition, the Summit Area YMCA in Berkeley Heights is collecting non-perishable items to support families and individuals struggling with hunger and poverty. The Berkeley Heights YMA is located at 59 Locust Avenue.
Summit Free Public Library is also accepting donations of canned goods — through the Health & Hunger Initiative — which will be picked up, packaged and distributed to families in need.

The donation box is located near the Library Community Bulletin Board before you enter the children’s area. Donations will be collected through March.
Some of the other MLK Day events include an "MLK Shabbat" at Congregation Ohr Shalom, a Unity Service at Central Presbyterian Church, a film screening of "Ruby Bridges," panel discussions and much more.
