SUMMIT, NJ — Summit's Planning Board was set to review the amendments made to the Broad Street West redevelopment plan on Monday, but the city announced Thursday that there will be a change of course.

The Planning Board's Monday, June 27 meeting has been canceled. According to the city's announcement, the Common Council has requested that the Planning Board not proceed with its Master Plan consistency review of Broad Street West redevelopment plan amendments.

In response to the public's opposition to the size of the building and other concerns, the council plans to work with redevelopers and the project steering committee to revise the project's plans.

A modified timeline for the project and council action will be provided in September, according to the city.

At Tuesday's council meeting, President Marjorie Fox said the council will not hold a final hearing and vote on the redevelopment plan until Sept. 13. It was previously supposed to take place in July.

By a majority vote, the council also approved the amendments made to the redevelopment plan on Tuesday. However, many residents felt that the revisions that were made, particularly in regards to Subdistrict 3, were minimal and did not address the issue of the building's large scale.

Instead of the Planning Board meeting on Monday, the council will hold a special meeting to vote on a resolution to reconsider the introduction of an ordinance to amend the redevelopment plan, as well as rescind the resolution referring the proposed amendment to the Planning Board.

The meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall.
