Stay Safe Over The Holidays With Help From The Summit Fire Department
Candle fires happen most frequently during this time of the year, the Summit Fire Department says.
SUMMIT, NJ — The holidays mean a lot of heat, lights, and opportunities to remain vigilant around trees and other decorations.
The Summit Fire Department is reminding residents of the heightened risk of flames that can start during this time of the year.
Along with "time in the kitchen," said Chief Eric Evers, "...all this holiday cheer comes with a greater risk of fire. By taking proper precautions, you can ensure that you and our loved ones are safe this holiday season."

Candles should be kept at least one foot away from anything flammable. According to the Summit Fire Department, most candle fires occur on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.
Trees should be kept three feet away from sources of heat like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles, and heat vents. They should also be watered daily and disposed of when dry.
More information on safe practices can be found on the Summit Fire Department's website, or by visiting National Fire Protection Association online.
