Summit Honoring Military With Hometown Heroes Program

The streets will be decorated with support.

SUMMIT, NJ — Active military and veterans will again be raised up and honored in 2026 throughout the City of Summit.

The ninth Hometown Heroes program is now available for registration through March 31.

City streets will be lined with display banners that depict the names, images, and dates of service of military members who have been submitted. Banners will be shown from mid-May through mid-August.

Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, United States Merchant Marines, and Women Airforce Service Pilots in World War II are all eligible.

Applicants have to meet one of the following requirements:

  • Live, or have lived, in the City
  • Currently or previously employed by the City or Summit Board of Education
  • Current or former volunteer in the Summit EMS, Police Auxiliary, or Volunteer Fire Division

"The banners are a poignant reminder of the sacrifice that many of our fellow Hilltoppers have made to help protect this country," Mayor Elizabeth Fagan said. "They deserve our thanks and recognition, and this program is a small but mighty symbol of our gratitude."

The Hometown Heroes initiative is funded through private donations. There is no cost to participate.

Application information can be found on the City of Summit website.

Donations to support the program can be made out to the Summit Foundation by check and mailed to Summit Hometown Heroes, P.O. Box 892, Summit, New Jersey, 07902.
