Summit Hospital Named Among Top In NJ For 2026: New Rankings

SUMMIT NJ — Overlook Medical Center was named the No. 5 hospital in all of New Jersey for 2026 according to new statewide rankings.

Newsweek worked with global data firm Statista to grade more than 6,000 hospitals and narrow the list down to just 800 that were noted for outstanding quality and care.

The scoring was broken down into four categories: Hospital quality metrics (50 percent of total score), hospital reputation (30 percent of the total score), patient experience (15 percent of total score), and PROMs implementation (five percent of the total score).

3. Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (New Brunswick)
4. Hackensack University Medical Center (Hackensack)

Hospital Quality Metrics

Technology, adequate staffing, and accreditation data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Medicare Fee-for-Service claims sourced from Arcadia, the American Hospital Association Annual Survey of Hospitals Database and from other recognized bodies.

Hospital Reputation

Medical professionals were asked to grade facilities in an online survey and were prohibited from reviewing their own. Facilities were scored on quality of care, patient counseling, accommodation and amenities, staffing, organization, and accessibility.

Patient Experience

Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems conducted an online survey that covered topics such as cleanliness of the hospital, communication to the patient from medical professionals, and staff responsiveness.

PROMs Implementation

Patient Reported Outcome Measures that are defined as "standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life related to an episode or experience of care."
