SUMMIT, NJ — After serving as mayor of Summit since her election in 2015, Mayor Nora Radest announced at Tuesday night's council meeting that she will not be running for re-election this year.

Radest is currently in her fourth year of her second term as mayor. Under the city charter, there are no term limits for the mayor, but Radest informed the public that she will not be running for a third term.

"It's been an amazing experience as your mayor," Radest said. "I have had many joyful moments and many challenges and I am grateful for all of that. I have learned something new every single day. And I know that the people who run this city do so with the greatest heart."

The mayor also released the following statement to Patch:

"Serving two terms as mayor in a city that I love has meant more to me that I ever could have imagined," she said. "At times, this job has been both incredibly challenging and rewarding but I could not be prouder of what we have accomplished here. I believe it is time to let someone else lead our exceptional city, and for me to enjoy more time with my grandchildren."

"While I do not plan to seek another political office, my husband Rob and I will remain in Summit and stay involved in the community," Radest added.

Elected in 2015 and sworn in in 2016, Radest topped then-incumbent Republican Ellen Dickson to secure her first term as mayor. She then ran again in 2o19 unopposed.

Radest will still serve as mayor until December of this year, and she said there is a lot she hopes to accomplish before her term is up.

Council President Greg Vartan praised the mayor for her dedication to city throughout her two terms.

"Much will be said about the Radest era in Summit's history," Vartan said. "Whoever chooses to seek the votes of this community to succeed you will have enormous shoes to fill."

"As a candidate, you always ran positive campaigns based on your love of this community, focused on your experience and qualifications and outlined your vision for the role of this office. I hope candidates this year will follow in your tremendous example," he added.
