Summit Seeks a Few Good Interns

The city is bringing back its internship program for the seventh year.

To college students who have yet to decide how they're going to spend their summer, Summit has a message: come intern with us.

For the seventh year, Summit is offering its unpaid internships to current college students majoring in political science, business, communications and marketing, or are simple interested in adding project management to their resumes.

Students are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week for at least four to six weeks this summer, according to a release.

The program has paid dividends to some former interns.

"I'm convinced that all of the subsequent jobs that I've gotten are largely because of the summer I worked with for the Department of Community Services. So even though that summer was unpaid, the experience was truly priceless," college graduate, former intern and Summit resident Ayse Unver said.

According to a release from the city, alumni of the program have been accepted into the White House internship program, a student program hosted by Google Inc., and a Goldman Sachs Undergraduate program, among other exciting academic and professional opportunities.

"We have had the privilege of hosting some outstanding students in this internship program. Working with these students has been a wonderful experience and while they are gaining experience for their resume, the City has benefited from the enthusiasm and energy that they bring to City Hall,” Beth Kinney, Director of Community Services, who oversees the internship program, said in a release.

There are a limited number of slots left to participate in this program. Internship may extend into the fall for those students who attend local colleges. The program is ideal for students with an interest in government and business, as well as communications and management. Interns will be exposed to all the aspects of city government and general office functions.
