Vartan Calls Out Kean Jr.

For Backing Medicaid Cuts That Could Result in $3 Million Revenue Loss for Overlook Medical Center, Jeopardize Summit Residents' Health Care

Summit, NJ — Greg Vartan, Chairman of the Summit Democrats and candidate for Congress in NJ-7, today is calling out Congressman Tom Kean Jr. for his vote to greenlight a massive proposed reduction in federal Medicaid funding that poses a significant threat to Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ. According to hospital-specific 2023 data from the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), Overlook stands to lose approximately $3 million in Medicaid revenue, potentially compromising essential healthcare services for local residents.

“I was born at Overlook and spent years as an EMT transporting patients there in crisis. This hospital is a lifeline. Congressman Tom Kean Jr.’s attack on Medicaid isn’t just wrong—it’s a betrayal of the community he’s supposed to represent,” said Vartan.
Overlook Medical Center, serves a diverse community across Union, Morris, and Essex counties. The hospital's services, including emergency care, pediatric services, and specialized treatments, are vital to the region's healthcare infrastructure. A shortfall could lead to staff reductions, longer wait times, and diminished access to critical care for thousands of patients.
As the budget proposal moves forward, community members and healthcare advocates are urging lawmakers to reconsider the ramifications of these cuts on local hospitals and the populations they serve.
About Greg: Greg Vartan, a fourth-generation Union County resident, is running for Congress to ensure that the American dream remains within reach for working families.
