War Memorials At Summit Village Green To Be Renovated, New One Installed

Summit's World War II monument will be renovated and a new memorial will honor those who fought and died in the Global War on Terror.

SUMMIT, NJ — As approved by the Summit Common Council earlier this year, the City of Summit Division of Public Works is working on upgrading the war memorials on the Village Green, as well as installing new ones.

The DPW began work on the project on Tuesday and is being funded by Summit Elks and the American Legion Post 233, according to the city.

As part of the project, the current World War II Memorial will be renovated, and a new monument will be installed honoring those who fought and died during the Global War on Terror.

Spokesperson Amy Cairns told Patch that "the area where the memorials reside on the Village Green needs some refreshing."

Cairns said when members of the Summit Elks Club and the American Legion Post 322 offered to help fund the renovation project, adding a tribute to those who fought/fight the Global War on Terror, the Common Council approved it.

According to the city, granite benches will be added and walkways surrounding the monuments will be replaced.

Additional upgrades that include landscaping, lighting and a refurbished flagpole will be completed later this year.

The project is expected to be complete at the end of November, weather permitting, according to the city's website.
