Anthony Verley Becomes Teaneck's First Black Fire Chief

Verley named chief, Draney promoted to deputy chief.

Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Verley was promoted to chief at Tuesday night's Township Council meeting, making him the town's first black fire chief.

Verley, a member of the Teaneck Fire Department for 23 years, accepted the promotion flanked by family members.  He had been serving as acting fire chief since April.

"I know he's going to take the fire department to new heights," said Township Manager William Broughton. "I'm glad to call him chief and I'm glad to be working side by side with him."

"I appreciate the opportunity given to me to lead the fire department," Verley said after being sworn in.

In addition to serving in the fire department, Verley has been a member of the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps for more than 20 years.  Verley took over after former Fire Chief Robert Montgomery retired in March.

Verley wasn't the only fire official to be promoted at Tuesday's meeting. Battalion Chief Thomas Draney was promoted to deputy fire chief where he will oversee the department's operations.  A second-generation firefighter, Draney is a 24 year veteran of the department.

Mayor Mohammed Hameeduddin thanked the two men for their service and said he expected great things from the new chiefs.

A cluster of uniformed firefighters turned out to snap photos and applaud their new bosses.

"Thank you for this opportunity to serve the town," Draney said. "I just want to say to all my colleagues here -- look out."
