Carmelo ‘Charlie’ Sgro Jr., Teaneck Educator, Dies at 87
Former Teaneck High School vice principal served in the U.S. Army before continuing his public service in Teaneck.

Carmelo "Charlie" Sgro Jr., a longtime educator with the Teaneck public school district and military veteran, died May 31. He was 87.
Mr. Sgro served in the U.S. Army before becoming a teacher. He served with the U.S. Army in WWII for Company G 317th Infantry Regiment 80th Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
“For his service to our Country he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the European-African- Middle Eastern Campaign Medal,” according to his obituary posted on Legacy.com.

Mr. Sgro continued his public service by launching a 35-year teaching career at Teaneck High School, rising to become vice principal, his obituary said. He was also a member of the New Jersey Education Association.
Mr. Sgro was a native of Calabria, Italy, and grew up in Cliffside Park. He was married for 59 years to his wife, Pauline.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Dangler Lewis and Carey Funeral Home, 312 West Main Street in Boonton. The burial will be held at Saint Catherine of Siena Church in Mountain Lakes at noon, followed by interment at Rockaway Valley Cemetery in Boonton. Family and friends can visit at the funeral home Monday from 5 to 9 p.m.
