Cooling Centers Opened As Heat Blasts Bergen

Cooling Centers provide relief to those without air condition as temperatures are expected to keep climbing throughout the week.

With temperatures expected to climb above 90 degrees throughout the week, carrying humidity that will make it feel closer to 100 degrees, officials reported that several designated Cooling Centers throughout Bergen County are open to offer relief from the heat. 

In addition to official centers setup by county officials, Teaneck offered residents the chance to cool off at the Richard Rodda Center and Teaneck Public Library during normal operating hours.

The county's centers are located in the following areas: 

County Administration Building: (8:30 am to 5:00 pm) Multi-Purpose Room, first floor, One Bergen County Plaza, Hackensack (201) 336-7300.

Rutherford Senior Center (8:30 am to 4 pm) 55 Kip Center, Rutherford (201) 460-1600.

The following cooling centers will be open through Friday, from 10:00 am through 6:00 pm as needed: 

Northwest Bergen Multipurpose Senior Activity Center: 46-50 Center St., Midland Park (201) 445-5690

Bergenfield Senior Center: 239 Murray Hill Terrace, Bergenfield (201) 387-7212.

Southwest Bergen Multipurpose Senior Activity Center: 147 Hackensack St., East Rutherford (201) 935-8920

Fair Lawn has also announced the opening of three cooling centers that will be open throughout this week’s heat wave.

Community Center: Wednesday through Friday – 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Senior Center: Wednesday through Friday – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fair Lawn Library: Wednesday and Thursday - 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to the Cooling Centers, officials recommend that people keep cool by visiting public libraries, shopping centers, recreation and senior centers.
