Former Teaneck Police Chief Dies At 55: Officials

Officials mourned a former Teaneck police chief who was found dead this week at 55.

TEANECK, NJ — Bergen County residents are mourning retired Teaneck Police Chief Glenn O'Reilly, who died unexpectedly last week at 55.

Reilly joined the department in 1991 and was promoted to chief in 2017, according to a statement from the police. He retired on New Year's Day of 2023, succeeded by current chief Andrew McGurr.

Teaneck Mayor Mark Schwartz said O'Reilly was "a fierce defender of his residents, rose through the ranks and served six years as chief including COVID and other events that he led us tirelessly." He added, "Gone too young and will forever be remembered."

Rabbi Abe Friedman, who serves as a chaplain to several law enforcement agencies, said, "I had the opportunity to work with Chief O’Reilly. He was a true gentleman. Treated people with kindness."

The police department posted on social media, "It is with sincere condolences that we announce the passing of Retired Chief of Police Glenn M. O'Reilly. Hired on July 29, 1991, he rose through the ranks...Chief O'Reilly retired on January 1, 2023 after 31 and a half years of distinguished service."

O'Reilly is survived by his five kids, whom he called his "army of children," according to his obituary.
