Fort Lee Police Seek Route 4 Gas Station Robber

The robbery, in which a man brandished a handgun and demanded cash from the register after asking for a pack of cigarettes, occurred just after 1:30 a.m. Monday at an Exxon station on Route 4, police say.

Fort Lee police are searching for a man they say swiped $700 from a local gas station and mini-mart early Monday morning after asking the attendant for a pack of cigarettes and then pointing a gun at him and demanding cash from the register.

Fort Lee police received a called just after 1:30 a.m. Monday that an armed robbery had just taken place at the station at 2338 Route 4, police said.

When police arrived at the scene, the gas station attendant told them a black male wearing a green hooded sweatshirt entered the mini-mart, asked for a pack of Newport cigarettes and pointed a small silver handgun at him as he was reaching to get him the cigarettes, police said.

The attendant told police he gave the man money from the register, and that he then reached into the register and grabbed more before fleeing the station on foot, police said.

The employee also said he saw a gray, four-door sedan of unknown make or model leave the area on Route 4 West, police said.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations also responded and processed the crime scene. The owner of the gas station told police the robber made off with $700, police said, adding that there were no injuries.

“There was some [surveillance] video—not good though because of the position of the camera, but we’re going to try to get a photo off of it anyway,” said Capt. Roy Bortolus of the . “It was unusual though because of the height of this guy and the age.”

Police provided the following description of the man they are searching for in connection with the incident: 30- to 35-year-old, light-skinned, black male, about five feet, four inches tall and weighing 135 to 145 pounds with a slim build, wearing a green hooded sweatshirt.
