Holy Name Expands Graduate Medical Education with Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program
Training the Next Generation of Compassionate Women's Health Physicians

Holy Name is proud to announce that its Graduate Medical Education (GME) program has been recognized with full accreditation of its Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and will welcome its first class of residents in the summer of 2026. This achievement reflects Holy Name’s ongoing commitment to medical excellence, enhanced training opportunities, and improved healthcare outcomes by cultivating a community hospital learning environment that prepares the next generation of clinically excellent physicians dedicated to compassionate care.
The new residency program is built upon Holy Name’s longstanding commitment to high-quality, patient-centered healthcare and aims to equip young physicians with the clinical, research, and educational skills necessary for professional and personal success. Through a culturally sensitive, evidence-based, and comprehensive educational experience, residents will gain the tools and mentorship needed to thrive as leaders in women’s health.
“Our mission is to provide an exceptional learning environment where residents can develop the full spectrum of skills required to excel as obstetricians and gynecologists,” said Sharyn N. Lewin, MD, FACS, FACOG, Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program Director at Holy Name. “By integrating community-based training with academic rigor, we are preparing physicians to not only deliver excellent clinical care but also lead with empathy and integrity.”

Residency training, which follows medical school, allows new physicians to specialize in specific areas of medicine and surgery. During residency, doctors train alongside experienced clinicians, conduct research, and expand healthcare access in the community.
“Residents in our program will benefit from diverse clinical experiences, supportive mentorship, and a collaborative learning culture,” said Vasantha Kondamudi, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Designated Institutional Officer. “This program represents Holy Name’s dedication to advancing women’s health and medical education in our community.”

About ACGME Accreditation
ACGME accreditation of a new residency program is based on published accreditation standards and is accomplished through a peer review process. Participation in ACGME accreditation ensures that residents develop proficiency in six core competencies: patient care and procedural skills, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and communication.
While ACGME accreditation is voluntary, programs must be ACGME-accredited in order to receive graduate medical education funds from the federal Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Residents must graduate from ACGME-accredited programs to be eligible to take their board certification examinations and, in many states, to obtain a medical licensure.
