Masks Optional At Teaneck Schools March 7

The state executive order requiring masks in schools is set to expire Monday, and Teaneck Schools will also be mask-optional.

TEANECK, NJ — The state executive order requiring masks in schools is set to expire Monday, and Teaneck Public Schools will also be mask-optional.

The district superintendent, Dr. Christopher Irving, told families the results of a mask survey were "split fairly evenly" in a message sent Friday.

"Anyone who wishes to continue wearing a mask will do so with our full support and understanding," Irving said.

"Our vaccination rate among staff is extremely high; and very good for our 12-18 year old student population," Irving continued. "Although we would like to see more 5-11 year old children vaccinated - and hope that a vaccine for younger children will be coming soon - most small children struggle wearing a mask correctly all day."

Irving said many parents, students, and staff want to see desk barriers removed from classrooms.

"... we hope to have these all removed over the next few weeks," he said.

"I want to thank everyone for your patience and cooperation over the past two years," Irving continued. "It is my hope that the remainder of this school year will bring about a gradual return to normalcy for our staff, and especially for our students."

Districts have the option to keep the mandate in place after March 7.

The mandate for masks on school buses was also dropped.

Bergen County is now at a "low" COVID activity level, according to the state and to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
