Missing Teaneck Man Found Thru Project Lifesaver: Sheriff

After a man with dementia went missing from his Teaneck home Tuesday evening, authorities say "Project Lifesaver" enabled his safe return.

TEANECK, NJ – After a man with dementia went missing from his Teaneck home Tuesday evening, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office says it was able to track the 70-year-old down in about an hour thanks to its Project Lifesaver program.

Around 8 p.m., Bergen County Sheriff’s officers Patrick Doyle and Joseph LaBarbera were dispatched to the township to assist. After a coordinated search between the sheriff’s office and Teaneck police, the man was found around 9:15 p.m., about a mile away and safely returned home to his family, according to Bergen County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Derek Sands.

Project Lifesaver is designed to locate children and adults who have gone missing due to Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down syndrome, dementia and other related disorders. Participants are provided a lightweight wristband that allows authorities to locate and identify them if they wander away from home.
